Connecting neighbors to resources
The Iredell County Public Library is pleased to announce the continuation of its Community Navigator program at the Statesville branch through a partnership with Appalachian State University (ASU). Designed to strengthen the library’s connection to the community, the program helps residents access essential resources and services while removing barriers to support.
The Community Navigator provides one-on-one guidance and referrals for residents seeking help with housing, food, healthcare, transportation, legal services, employment, and education. The program has expanded its reach through the library’s Kindness Closet, local food pantry efforts, and the Mobile Library.
The library’s new Community Navigator intern is Virgil Chavez, a Statesville native who earned an undergraduate degree in psychology from Guilford College before pursuing his Master of Social Work at ASU. With a passion for serving Statesville and the surrounding community, Chavez is focused on creating a welcoming, safe space for all patrons seeking assistance.
Since beginning his placement, Chavez has provided critical bilingual assistance, including Spanish translation and interpretation, along with referrals for housing, employment, and food resources. Outside of work and academics, he enjoys soccer, basketball, football, WWE, music, and gaming.
Community Navigator hours vary on Mondays and Tuesdays. Patrons seeking support or referrals can contact the Chavez at community.navigator@iredellcountync.gov or 704-832-2168 to schedule an appointment.
